About A Place in the Sun
In the 22 years it has now been on our screens, A Place in the Sun has become more and more popular with Brits in the UK that dream of one day living abroad. With several spin off shows including A Place in the Sun: Home or Away?, A Place in the Sun: Summer Sun, A Place in the Sun: Winter Sun and several others, it has inspired thousands to take that plunge and buy a property abroad.
The original format of A Place in the Sun follows British families on their search to find their new dream property in the sun. Having given the show’s researchers a list of requirements, the presenter shows them around three or four properties they believe to be suitable.
The show takes you to sunny locations all over the world including the sunny South of Spain where we ourselves at Movehappy are based. A Place in the Sun is still a show which comes up during conversations with our clients. It has inspired many to take the first step and make contact with estate agents in Spain. We have had many clients contacting us about properties in areas they have seen on the show. One of the most popular areas which has featured on the show many times is Torrevieja which is where the Movehappy offices are now located.
A Place in the Sun – Torrevieja
Torrevieja is a coastal city located on the sunny Costa Blanca where a beautiful Mediterranean climate can be enjoyed all year round. With over 300 days of sunshine every year it has become an increasingly popular area for expats and has grown significantly in recent years.
Torrevieja most recently appeared on A Place in the Sun on 30th April 2021 presented by Jean Johansson. The episode followed David and Peter, brothers from Wolverhampton on their property search in November/December 2020. With a large extended family, they were searching for the perfect holiday home in Torrevieja or the surrounding area on the Costa Blanca to suit the whole family. They wanted three bedrooms, access to a communal pool and to be close to amenities such as bars, shops, restaurants and a golf course.
After a year of tirelessly researching the area and searching for the perfect property they turned to A Place in the Sun. They had a budget of £80,000-£100,000 and were shown five suitable properties in the area.
The first property they were shown was a 3 bedroom townhouse in Villamartin. Villamartin is located 4 kilometres inland from the coast at La Zenia and just 10 kilometres from Torrevieja and is known for its famous championship Villamartin Golf Course and the many blue flag beaches it has nearby. As well as its three bedrooms, the property comprised one and a half bathrooms, open plan lounge/dining room, separate kitchen, a balcony, rooftop solarium and lovely communal swimming pool. The townhouse was within walking distance of local amenities and was valued at just £98,214 at the time of filming.
The second property David and Peter were taken to was a three bedroom semi-detached house in El Galan which is located between Villamartin and Campoamor. In addition to its three bedrooms the property had spacious open plan living and a communal swimming pool. The several balconies and terraces caught viewers attention offering distant sea views, all valued at £106,250 at the time of filming.
Property number three was a three bedroom bungalow in La Marina, 20 minutes north of Torrevieja. It had open plan living, a lovely communal pool, an outdoor space and a huge rooftop solarium/terrace. The property was within walking distance of local amenities and was valued at the fantastic price of just £93,750 at the time of filming.
The fourth property viewed by David and Peter was the cheapest, valued at just £75,893 at the time of filming. It was located in the popular expat town of Ciudad Quesada. As well as being the cheapest, this townhouse had four bedrooms, lots of outside space including a courtyard and large rooftop terrace as well as access to a communal swimming pool. The house needed some work but was full of potential.
Property number five took them back to La Marina to a three bedroom, two bathroom bungalow. All three bedrooms were doubles and the open plan living space was also spacious. The bonus here was the large basement area which would be perfect for entertaining. In terms of outside space, it had a large split level terrace as well as a large rooftop solarium/terrace and access to a large communal swimming pool. The property was valued at £102,679 at the time of filming.
David and Peter fell in love with property number five – the bungalow in La Marina. At the end of the episode we saw them have an offer of £92,000 accepted. So, what happened next? Within three or four hours of the offer being accepted they had put down a deposit of €10,000 to secure the property. At the time of the episode being aired on television in April 2021 they were simply waiting for travel back to Spain to complete the sale and become the new owners of their dream property in the sun!
